Yesterday, His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada presented honours during a ceremony at the Shaw Conference Centre, in Edmonton, Alberta.
More than 70 remarkable Canadians were recognized for their excellence, courage or exceptional dedication to service including Ms. Candice Lys and Ms. Nancy Elizabeth MacNeill of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. They were awarded the Meritorious Service Medal (Civil Division) for co-founding Fostering Open eXpression among Youth (FOXY). Through life-changing workshops and peer leader retreats, they have empowered youth and especially girls in the Northwest Territories to freely express their sexual health and relationship challenges, acquire new skills to make healthy life choices, and share lessons learned with their communities. Thanks to FOXY, youth play an active role in building stronger communities in the North.
“FOXY is unique in that it is developed by young people who grew up in the Northwest Territories, using their own experiences to guide the development of this unique, youth-driven, tailored program. I have been a proud supporter of this program and I look forward to see where it goes in the future. Today, I send my congratulations to Candice and Nancy on receiving this well- deserved recognition”.
